چکیده

The capabilities of the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) Research Center full-scale test chamber are described in detail. This research facility allows complete full-scale structures to be tested. Testing at full-scale allows vulnerabilities of structures to be evaluated with fewer assumptions than was previously possible. Testing buildings under realistic elevated wind speeds has the potential to isolate important factors that influence the performance of components, potentially allowing for modifications to standard testing procedures that are commonly used to evaluate product performance. IBHS’ wind-related research is discussed, along with research examining natural perils that are highly affected by wind flows around a structure, such as winddriven rain during high-wind events and firebrand exposures during wildfires. In addition, IBHS’ hail testing capabilities are described.

Wind Effects on Lowrise Buildings

In the opening decades of wind engineering research and application the typical focus was on the glamorous, highrise structure. These expensive projects could typically afford the high cost of a wind-tunnel study. As the relative cost of these studies has decreased over the last forty years, more conventional architecture has found its way into the wind tunnel. However, it is still quite rare f...

Does it make sense to modify tropical cyclones? A decision-analytic assessment.

Recent dramatic increases in damages caused by tropical cyclones (TCs) and improved understanding of TC physics have led DHS to fund research on intentional hurricane modification. We present a decision analytic assessment of whether it is potentially cost-effective to attempt to lower the wind speed of TCs approaching South Florida by reducing sea surface temperatures with wind-wave pumps. Usi...

Investigating the Effect of Microbial Induced Carbonate Precipitation on Reducing Wind Erodibility of Soils in Segzi Desert Area, Isfahan

Desertification has become one of the main problems of human societies living in the vicinity of desert areas in recent years. One of the methods that have been considered in recent years and are rapidly expanding in the field of soil mechanics is the Microbial Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP). In this method, urea-positive organisms that are naturally present in the soil can stabilize th...

Severe Wind Gust Risk for Australian Capital Cities – A National Risk Assessment approach

A review commissioned in June 2001 by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) entitled 'Natural Disasters in Australia: reforming mitigation, relief and recovery arrangements' concluded that a new approach to natural disasters in Australia was needed. This approach would aim to achieve safer, more sustainable Australian communities in addition to a reduction in risk, damage and losses from...

Optimal Reconfiguration in Smart Distribution Network in the Presence of DG Resources under Uncertainties

Due to the growth and expansion of cities and the unchanged distribution network, an important issue for electricity distribution companies is customer satisfaction with the quality of received power. It is clear that with the expansion of load centers, the amount of line power flow increases, that creates problems such as voltage drop and increased losses. Distribution network reconfiguration ...
